Do you really use Loctite 518 on main case bolts?

Putting the motor back together tonight and the manual says use loctite 518 on the threads, the bolts I took out looked like they had Loctite red on them. 518 is a gasket maker why would they use it on threads? I am using the 2002 Seadoo manual from this site. Any help would be great.

I use blue loctite on the threads and some grease or never seize on the shaft and it works good for me.

Thats what I was thinking, the gasket maker parts makes no sense. The motor has red threadlock on the bolts (and a lot I might add) and no moly grease. Did they change the assembly procedures in the last few years?

If you check they are probably requiring 518 on the cases, not the threads. I wouldn't use it though, as Three Bond 1211 is much better than the 518. Use Loctite 242 blue on the threads.

What you're seeing on the bolts probably is 518, as it is red & when cured looks a bit like Loctite 271 red.

    This is the ticket.

I had some 1104 so I used that along with the blue on the threads. It diden't blow up on the bench last night so it should be good

I noticed 1104 has been discontinued. Replaced by 1194. Not sure what 1104 uses as a solvent base, but I like the specs of the 1211 (silicone based) better. Solvent based sealants tend to have shrinkage.

Another comparative item to 1211 if you can't locate it locally, go to your local Honda car dealership parts department and ask fo a tube of HondaBond. It's supposed to be chemically the same, it's just gray instead of white. I've used it before with excellent results too.

the red 518 is what Seadoo used on the cases and bolts. I use 3 bond on the cases now an a teflon pipe sealer on the case bolts. They used the 518 to seal the threads and keep the bolts from getting stuck from water and corrosion. Yamaha recomends sealer on the bolts and It seams to work well for me.

I just put a bottem end together the other night, a 951. I put 515 on the threads and grease above the treads.

This is what the manual calls for. Then again, I used 1211 and the manual doesn't call for that!
