Vapors caused water scooter explosion, officials say
The explosion of a personal watercraft Sunday that injured two teenage sisters was caused by the ignition of lingering vapors, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Unlike power boats, most water scooters are not equipped with ventilation systems to expel gas vapors.
“There was a build-up of fumes, and an exposed spark that ignited those fumes and caused the explosion,” said sheriff's spokesman Jim Bordner.
The 1999 Polaris water scooter exploded in the Intracoastal Waterway north of the Memorial Causeway, sending Tiffany M. Davis, 16, and Heather N. Davis, 19, into the water.
They were rescued by marine enforcement unit Deputy Richard Bennett, who had just ticketed Heather Davis for not wearing a life jacket. Though the younger sister was piloting the craft, the older sister was cited because she had borrowed the vessel, Bennett said.
At Bennett’s discretion, the $93 ticket will be voided

I still cant believe when I read stories of people not wearing their life vests on a PWC. I see it fairly frequently.
