    I think I killed my ski!

    Well I was riding my 97 slt780 and it was running great, after a long full throttle run I slowed down and it lost power and died. I got it home and now the starter will barely turn the motor over and the battery cables smoke when running the starter. I can not turn the motor by hand and there are no holes though my pistons.

    Did I destroy my crankshaft or could something else cause this?

    When it died, was there any unusual noises or vibration?

    Start by removing the jet pump (four LONG bolts) and the drive shaft. If the jet pump bearings have seized, the motor will be very hard to turn over.

    With the jet pump removed, see if the engine will now turn by hand. If yes, then the engine may be OK. If not, then perform further diagnostics on the engine.

    Also inspect the impeller for easy turning. If it is stiff, or the bearings make any sound other than smooth turning, then the impeller needs to be removed, and new bearings installed in the jet pump stator.

    I did not make any noises, earlier in the it sometimes did not want to go above half throttle.

    I have removed the driveshaft and impeller still I can not turn it by hand even with the spark plugs out.

    Could the crankshaft bearings have falled or is it more likely a piston failure?

    Sounds like it is time to take the cylinder heads off, and see what is going on in the cylinders.

    Either something has caused one of the pistons to stick, or the crank shaft has seized up one or more bearings.

    If you see any signs of damage, show us some pictures so we can advise further.

    engine seize

    Same thing happend to me two weeks ago on my 1050SL.

    Finally got around to taking the thing completely apart today.
    PTO crank bearings x 2 destroyed.

    Will post pics when I get around to it.

    Good luck with yours, maybe its something simpler for you, but in general, motor freezing while running = very bad.

    I guess now the question is do I fix it, sell it or part it out.

    I have two identical 97 slt780's, one I bought with the top end torn apart and now this one needs motor work.

    Anyone want these skis? I also have a double trailer.

    Depending on what the new engine problem is, you may be able to combine parts from the two machines to create one working machine.
