    Stator Update Kit

I just picked up a '97 SL900 over the weekend that needs to have the stator update kit installed. The guy that I got the ski from already purchased the update kit but couldn't afford to pay the charges to install the parts. Does anyone out there have any tips, advice, or reccomendations to make the change over less of a headache? I have done other stators in the past on other makes/models so any good tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Honda, WELCOME to the Green Hulk Forums!!

Loosening and sliding the tank forward seems to be the biggest help the guys talk about.

    Welcome to the Hulk!

Polaris 1992-1998 Service Manual is here.

The ignition update means that you need to use a newer Service Manual (2000 or later) if you need to diagnose the CDI ignition or stator coils.

Do a search on the Polaris section for flywheel removal, which is the hardest part of changing the stator assembly.

You can remove the flywheel with the engine in the hull, but working room is constricted around the front of the engine. Some folks have shifted the fuel tank forward, or removed it, to give them more working room.

Others find it easier to just remove the entire engine from the hull, work on the engine on a workbench, then put it back into the hull.

Makes it easier to clean up the hull interior, if it needs it.

    Have you checked compression?
Any other engine related things that may need attention?
How many hours on the engine?

    Carbs need cleaning?

    Thanks for the quick replies!!

The ski is in very good condition and fresh water used only. The compression is spot on and the rest of the ski checks out good. It's always nice to hear from people who have "been there, done that" when it comes to repairs. Thanks again for the info.
