96 Polaris SLT780 Trim and Speed Question

    I have a 96 SLT780, just bought used.
I have gone over the ski with tips from this site... thanks very much for your tips. I fixed the MFD last week. it was the fuse.

    Does it have Trim?
When riding with one person, it will plane out very easy.
With two or three it seems that we must lean as far forward as we can to get it start going. Seems like the motor wont catch the water and start going.

Also what is the top speed on a stock SLT780? I got mine up to 50mph. just checking to see if thats about right.

    Thanks txstory

50-52 is about right. No trim unless someone added it. How many rpms are ya getting?

    Welcome.

Have you looked into the jet pump for damage to the impeller or stator blades? Look in from the bottom intake and the rear. A good flashlight will help. Dings or chunks missing will reduce thrust.

You might also want to check for wear around the outside of the impeller. Max clearance spec is 0.020" between impeller edge and the wear ring, and normally should be much less than that.

How much total weight are these two or three passengers?
1996 SLT780 is rated for 500lbs total passenger weight, and will be happier with less.

At max i was getting about 5940 rpm.
I bought it about two weeks ago. I replaced the spark plugs and a couple hoses i thought needed replacing. Fixed the MFD with a fuse, polished the ski and recovered the seat. It was $1300 with the trailer.

Ran like a top all weekend on lake texoma.

Well i tried it with two pass. at about 230lbs and it still did it a little. One adult one child. I could lean foward about over handle bars and get it plane out and start hauling. Also i found if i turned it from side to side just a few feet, it would catch and start picking up speed.
The three person total wieght was about 435lbs. Two adults one child.

That sounds a little low. Should be about 63-6400 w/ one person.
Have ya checked compression? Checked piston wash? Cleaned carbs? Checked reeds?

I am wondering if the carbs are not right, and it is bogging at low engine RPM.

Check compression. If that is good, then the carbs are suspect, and probably need a good cleaning.

In fact, cleaning the carbs is really a must with these engines. Dirty carbs can kill your engine, especially if you keep running it.
