Can you run ski without pump?

I took the pump out along with the drive shaft. I reinstalled the new impeller by IR. I ran the motor with the pump out not thinking about it till right now. I was sleeping and woke up thinking about it. Can you run the motor without the drive shaft and pump in? Or will the intermediate shaft drop?
To reinstall the pump, I just slide it back through correct or are there any internal clamps etc. I need to worry about?
    Learning the hardway I know.

I did one time and the engine reved a lot higher. I shut if off immediately. I had just finished assembling the engine and wanted to make sure the engine would turn on.

You are OK. The intermediate shaft is pressed into the bearing and bolted to the boat. Just apply some grease to the splines, slide the shaft back in and make sure the splines mate up before you tighten the pump. Also dab some 592/572 loctite, or anti-sieze to the pump bolt threads.

well a buddy of mine has a rxp, it has two big holes in the bottom of the hull. So we are going to take the motor out, then fix the holes in it. Then put that motor back in it, etc. etc. I've just been working on getting 8 skis done before I started on it. I am down to just one now.
My buddy wanted to find someone to fix it and we were trying to get ideas, someone offered to buy it, so my buddy said he'd take no less than a certain amount. He really doesn't want to sell it, but if someone gives him what he wants for it, he'll sell it. Ya know what I mean?
