    Introducing the 09 Sea Doo lineup of watercraft and sports boats

    Introducing the 2009 Sea-Doo® Luxury Performance Segment Models

    • GTX† Limited iS 255 (new model)
    • GTX 215
    • GTX 155

    And for the pictures you have all been waiting for,

    Introducing
    the all new Sea Doo GTX Limited iS 255

    My friend Stephen Kalhok of BRP introducing the GTX LTD iS to us on the beach before our ride.

    And of course we had a model on location for photo ops

    First, some words from BRP's literature and then i will share my own comments
    (below in blue text)The 2009 Sea-Doo GTX Limited iS 255 model represents nothing less than the reinvention of personal watercraft. The unmatched GTX Limited iS 255 gets its top of the line performance from a supercharged and intercooled 255 hp Rotax® 4-TEC® engine, the most powerful in the industry. This 255 is the one that Powersport News, Watercraft World, and Trailer Boats
    magazines confirm has the best fuel economy in its class, while delivering the highest output and the best performance. Now, the GTX Limited iS 255 adds a host of advanced technology and exclusive innovation new to the industry.

    GTX Limited iS 255: All-New Sea-Doo iControl System – sophisticated, seamless and integrated
    • Adapts to every riding style
    • Accommodates to changing water conditions
    • User-friendly technology you can use
    The new Sea-Doo iControl™ system is the brain that integrates and controls all systems on the GTX Limited iS 255. iControl optimizes the functionality of the new Sea-Doo Intelligent Suspension and Intelligent Brake and Reverse technologies (see below) and is responsible for the never-before-experienced ability of riders to adapt models on the fly to different riding styles, changing water conditions, and a wide variety of other situations. iControl is next generation, user-friendly technology from Sea-Doo. The key iControl features and benefits on the 2009 GTX

    Limited iS 255 include
    • Cruise control to set and maintain a constant speed;
    • Cable-less, Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) for improved fuel economy;
    • GPS speedometer for more accurate speed-readings;
    • Improved Learning Key™ that allows the owner to set speed limit and control the amount of acceleration, while also reducing fuel consumption;
    • Interactive Multi Function Digital Information Centre with iS, iBR and Learning Key
    settings, and much more;
    • Off-Throttle Assisted Steering (O.T.A.S.) for enhanced control when the throttle is not engaged; and Slow Speed Mode for the ability to adjust and set idle speed from 0 to 7 mph (0 to 11km/h).

    GTX Limited iS 255: All-New Sea-Doo Intelligent Suspension – the smoothest ride on water
    • Greater comfort
    • Less rider fatigue
    • Better control

    Intelligent Suspension™ (iS™) System. iS delivers the smoothest ride of any PWC, while being incredibly versatile and very user-friendly. With six inches (15 cm) of travel, the GTX Limited iS 255 is factory calibrated for a smoother ride for the ultimate in comfort. iS supports the entire rider
    environment, so the operator can stay seated, while the impact from waves is absorbed by the suspension. iS is rider adjustable on the fly. A rocker switch on the left handle bar allows the rider to fine tune the factory-set suspension calibration through nine different settings from soft to firm. This way, the operator can adapt the ride according to personal preference and changing conditions.

    The current setting is displayed at the top of the Interactive Multi-Function Digital Information Center. Alternatively, the rider can select the Auto Calibration setting. When engaged, the auto setting constantly monitors the stroke of the suspension. Then it automatically adjusts the firmness to
    compensate for changing water conditions and passenger load to ensure that the maximum amount of suspension travel is available without bottoming, thus delivering the smoothest possible ride in every situation.

    The major benefit of iS is to enhance the PWC experience by allowing the rider to cruise longer distances with more comfort and less fatigue. For passengers, the family-friendly iS also means less strain, plus a greatly enhanced feeling of security with greater control and comfort.
    When the 2009 Sea-Doo GTX Limited iS 255 model is turned off, or the rider engages “Park” mode by pressing a button on the Info Centre, the iS system automatically lowers the centre of gravity of the watercraft by almost 3” (75 mm) for greater stability at rest and easier trailering.

    GTX Limited iS 255: All-New Sea-Doo Intelligent Brake and Reverse – first ever on-water braking
    • On demand stopping
    • Better situational awareness
    • Superior low speed manoeuvring
    • Improved safety

    Brake and Reverse™ (iBR™) system. iBR is a Sea-Doo exclusive with several integrated functions: the first-ever on water braking system; new, hands-on-the-handlebars reverse; and an enhanced variable trim system.

    The brake system significantly increases watercraft safety by providing the ability for rider initiated and controlled slowing down, stopping and improved obstacle avoidance. A lever on the left handlebar controls braking, similar to the one found on Ski-Doo® snowmobiles or Can-Am® ATVs. Through the natural and intuitive positioning and operation of this lever, the rider controls the amount of braking and can stop within a significantly shorter distance. The brake system works by cutting engine power, deploying the reverse gate and by reapplying engine power in reverse within a fraction of a second of applying sufficient brake lever pressure. After applying the brake, the system will default to Neutral until the throttle is reapplied.

    When the watercraft is stopped and the iBR lever is squeezed, it acts a shift lever to select reverse. For greater control, both hands remain on the handlebars for all reverse functions. With iBR, the watercraft always starts in neutral, which prevents the PWC from moving on start up. This feature is especially important for docking and maneuvering in close quarters.

    An enhanced high performance electronic VTS™ is an exclusive Sea-Doo technology integrated into the iBR system. This intuitive VTS allows the rider to easily fine-tune performance to suit personal preference and comfort. The iBR also allows the rider to pre-set up and down positions using handlebar-mounted buttons. The rider can also make on-the-fly trim adjustments of +/- 4 degrees to accommodate changing water or load conditions.

    Here's a shot showing the GTX LTD iS under full braking. When you squeeze the brake lever all the way you pretty much stop on a dime. You get a little wet doing it too

    GTX Limited iS 255: All-New Sea-Doo S3™ Hull – Stepped, Stable and Strong
    • Precise, tunable handling
    • Smoother, more stable ride
    • Effortless, tight cornering

    On the S3 hull, the “step” is aft of the intake and reduces drag by creating a low-pressure zone, keeping the hull “glued to the water”. The benefit is more nimble handling and, when combined with the exclusive Sea-Doo Enhanced High Performance VTS™ (Variable Trim System, see above), the
    stepped hull delivers precise, tuneable handling that makes the 2009 GTX Limited iS 255 watercraft corner “like it’s on rails”.

    The GTX Limited iS 255 S3 hull delivers a smoother, more stable ride. With its Deep-V design, narrow chine and 139” (353 cm) length (9“ [23 cm] longer than previous the 2008 GTX Limited model), the new S3 hull is exceptionally stable and confidence inspiring. The hull design is very tolerant to lateral wave impacts, resulting in very little roll or change in direction from this cross motion. What’s more, the longer length provides more room for passengers and allows the hull to bridge waves better for a smoother ride. The Deep-V design allows the hull to cut through rough water, which makes the ride a lot less tiring. It also enables a lean-in riding style that enhances the feeling of security and confidence for riders while cornering. The benefit is that the G-forces tend to push the rider down onto the seat, rather than out of it, so rider energy is working with the PWC rather than against it for effortless, tight cornering.

    The S3 hull on the 2009 GTX Limited iS 255 model is exceptionally strong. Stiffer than other hull designs thanks to its ribbed construction, the S3 hull has the strength to better resist damage from impacts and maintain its shape even under high loads. It uses new material that is 20% lighter than competitive hull materials. The S3 hull is built using a closed-mold process, which allows precise control over shape, in addition to increasing manufacturing efficiency and being more environmentally friendly. The S3 hull is finished with gelcoat, for a high quality finish that is easy to repair.

    Here's some pictures of the new stepped hull design.

    Specifications of the iS models
    Length .................................. 139" / 353 cm
    Width ................................... 48" / 122 cm
    Height .................................. 44" / 112 cm
    Weight (dry) .......................... 948 lbs / 430 kg
    Rider capacity ......................3
    Fuel capacity ........................18.6 US gal / 70 L
    Storage capacity ..................16.4 US gal / 62 L

    As you can see from the specifications this ski is big. 9" longer than an RXT. I can tell you that after personally having ridden this watercraft it doesn't feel nearly as big as it is. This ski is no closed course buoy racer but it's quite nimble for it's size. It has a nice "lean in" feel to it while going through turns.

    Of course, it smashes through the chop and you hardly feel any of it. On the day we got to ride this ski it was very choppy so we got a good feel for just how well the suspension system works. I liked that i was able to manually adjust the firmness of the suspension or put it in auto mode and let iControl control it for me. The entire top deck is suspended by this suspension system. Foot wells, seat, handlebars, etc. You ocean riding guys are going to love this.

    Vladimir of PPG and i were racing through some heavy chop. He was on the GTX LTD iS and i was on an RXT-X. This chop was brutal and we went at it for a couple of miles. Once we stopped i asked him if he was worn out. He still felt nice and fresh, i on the other hand was worn out and my arms and legs were burning.

    When we were told about the braking system at the press intro i was real skeptical about how effective it would be. I was wrong! It works amazingly well. Much like the brake in your car, the harder you push it the faster it will stop. If you pull the brake lever at full speed the ski basically stops very quickly. You do get a bit wet in the process
    We did side by side comparrisons wih a regular GTX and the iS model with brakes stopped in half the distance.

    I know everyone of you wants to know how fast this ski is. The answer is 65 mph. Even if you were going down stream in a 20 mph current. The speedo is a GPS speedometer. About time a manufacturer gives us one

    The bad news is the GPS speedometer is also a governor. It limits speed to 65 no matter what. The throttle no longer has a cable controlling it. It's all fly by wire so once you reach 65 the iControl will let off the throttle to maintain a top speed of 65 mph.

    The good news is Riva will have a module that can be installed to override the GPS governor.

    It's very cool how the ski starts in neutral. No, there is no transmission or anything like that. It's all controlled by the position of the reverse bucket. I also liked that there is no more reverse lever. The reverse and braking are all controlled from the same lever. Your hands never have to leave the bars. Cool stuff!

    One thing that came to mind was how hard is this ski going to be to work on because of the entire top deck being suspended and access to the engine limited. I asked the BRP engineers about this and they explained that the entire suspended top deck can be removed in about half an hour. They do it in 15 minutes but of course they have had lots of practice.

    I just want to clarify that not all of the new 09 skis have GPS speedometer/governor, suspension, brakes, etc. It's only the iS models that are equipped with this. Definitely lots of innovation in this new ski. I'm sure we will see many of these same features trickle down on future watercraft.

    MSRP pricing was not available to us at the Press Intro as BRP wanted to give the dealers the pricing first which happens today at the dealer show. I have heard rumors that the iS models would be priced at around $15,200. I'm sure we will all have MSRP pricing today after the dealer show is over.
