    Check out this supercharger failure

A forum member here told me he suffered a bearing failure and described some unique things about it so i asked him to send the assembly to me so i could have a look.

I figured i would post some pics so we all could learn from it.

The first thing i noticed was that all of the needle bearings were basically welded to the gear. I have never seen one this bad. This is caused by excessive slipping of the clutch. The needle bearings only come into play when the clutch is slipping which should be a rare occurrence in a properly functioning clutch.

You can see by the wear on the gear (oil grooves completely worn off the gear) that this clutch had been slipping for quite some time.

It slipped so bad that it actually welded one of the metal washers to the shaft

Once everything basically welded itself together the shaft broke and the rear bearing gave out. I'm real surprised that the gear didn't break.

This is an important lesson for all of us. This is why it's crucial to periodicly maintain our clutch and make sure it's kept at the proper slip moment. When the clutch starts slipping all the time bad things happen as shown above.

So how often should we really be checking the slip. 25 hours? 50 hours?
