I'm new and I need some help

Hi I just picked up a 97 xp. I was wondering if there is a way of identifying which engine I have. The guy I got it from told me he put all the running gear from his old 99 xpl into this hull after his wife hit a rock with the 99. The guy seemed pretty reliable but I just want to be sure of what I have. I need to straighten a couple small things out on it. Like the carbon seal and the seal between the hull and the pump. The wear ring looks good. The motor seems to sit nice and tight. Is there anything else I should check on it. I want to get everything working for next season so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks chris

well, I just realized in 99 the 800/787 engines were also grey/silver with black exh. my bad. How about taking a picture of the setup and posting it here for exact ID.

I haven't been able to get any pictures up because my camera died. But I have been reading up a bit on the engines. My engine has 2 carbs while I have been reading that the 787 is a single carb. Thanks chris

the 787 was never offered in a single carb configuration to the best of my knowledge, the 717 was. the easiest way to tell is a 951(XPL motor) leans to the right hand side of the ski(looking from the back) and the 787 leans to the left, the 581,650, and 717(anmd some ultra rare 787s) are verticle with the cylider block.

    umm..no it's not..

An easy way to tell is to look at the head.. The 787 head is very flat where the 951 head is not... Here's 2 pics... the first is a 787..

It's a lot more work to put a 951 in a 97' XP than just swapping everything over...the motor mounts don't line up...

Take some pics of the motor and the ski and someone will point you in the right direction..

    951

Other than the color and Coffmans pipe, this is what a 951 looks like.
