    1996 slx780

I have a stock slx780 and I am trying to get more speed out of it. The top end is 52mph.
On a stock unit what should be the first things I do?

You came to the right place!
Without a doubt, I would throw sum trippple pipes in it. Port the cylinders, bigger carbs, aftermarket reeds, head work, and pro cdi. True the hull and that should get ya some more spd and acceleration. I think you would be very pleased! But how much ya wanna spend?
More top end is gunna cost.

Consider the option of selling your current machine, and buying a faster model, vs putting money and effort into boosting the older/slower model you have now.

If you know what Polaris models have what you want (speed, acceleration, ride), it can be surprising how the purchase cost compares to what you can sell your current machine for, plus the dollars you don't have to spend making it faster.

Of course, if you want to enjoy the challenge of boosting your machine and work on it as a project, by all means, go for it!

Performance reeds, ported cyls, and 44mm carbs.

If you truly love that style of Polaris then get rid of it and find a SL1050 and that will put you around 60mph. Cheaper too.
