Leading edge of Impeller cut back

I've got a YF CD 14/20 impeller for my ski that was supposed to have been modded by Speedfreaks. I guess approx 10mm has been cut from the leading edge of the impeller. The trailing edge is std and OK etc. I don't believe the metal was removed from the leading edge due to rock damage etc. If you look at the prop in the pump there is no longer a full overlap of the blades.

Can any of you guys tell me why what the theory is behind this mod. Is it for better hook up, top speed etc?

    Cheers

    Kev

it is a top speed mod - allows the impeller to spin up to a higher rpm

    Thanks guys for the feedback.

Yes I might be selling it in a few weeks as I'm waiting on delivery of the bits to install the HO 2005 pump and DF Impeller.

I had one with the speed mod, and took it off the same day. It spun out of the hole way too much for my likeing.

just to clarify Carl and Eric did very different mods

Eric cut a corner off the blade - this reduced the blade area and allowed it to spin up higher

Carl cut the leading edge back to make to straight - this also reduce the blade area and allowed the prop to spin up - but this mod also changes the blade shape to a straight leading edge, this shape promotes a higher top speed

when you reduce the blade area and blade overlap it will have an effect on hook-up and holeshot (so there is a trade off - hook-up for top speed)
