    UMI racing intake grate need your opinion

    I bought a 98 slxh it had a umi racing intake grate on it. I just replaced it with a stock one. My question is is the umi racing intake grate good for anything? should i used the stock or umi racing? what are the pros and cons?

    The UMI will better load your pump and keep the boat to the water longer in the rough stuff.

    Note the similarities to the 750 R&D (in terms of the shovel or scoop size)?

    With the stock grate, did you pick up 11/2 or 2 or even 3 MPH versus the UMI?
    That's a lot of drag on a 750 3 seater.

    In your experience will i lose any peak water speed with the umi racing intake grate? Do you have any experience with the solas intake grates?

    The UMI intake grate looks more aggressive overall, than the R&D 750SL.

    Hard to tell which one hangs down the lowest, but the blade on that UMI is BIG.

    Is the UMI the most aggressive intake grate available for the Polaris hulls?

    I know the Watcon massaged Jet Dynamics intake grate seems to be well liked for the MSX hulls. Haven't heard much of it being used on Polaris SL or Virage hulls.

    thats funny how you answered my question before i asked it! I have two slxh's and they seemed to run the same top speed with my girlfriend on the stock intake grate and me on the UMI racing. the stock one on smooth water has produced a speed of 64 mph according to the mfd. I wanted to change back to factory b.c the speedo was reading 35mph at wot. you guys are changing my mind.

    The more HP you have the less peak speed you will lose. My guess and from what I remember the 750 3 seater lost somewhere between 2-3MPH, it was a huge speed loss and the reason most of us use the 650 grate on the 750/780 hulls.

    I will say when we were testing the grates back to back, the UMI slowed the boat the most BUT the trade is KILLER handling and hook up.

    The massaged JD grate is the monster for rough water handling but for everyday cruising or even speed runs the 650 grate is still the one to have, even on the MSX.
    Even with a MATRIX the JD intake will scrub 1-11/2MPH. Some guys with the stock MATRIX report a loss of 2+MPH. I don't know if anybody has installed one on a stock MSX 110, 140 or 150, I don't know that I'd even try.
