How do you tie down your yamaha?

I just got an 05 FX HO, the previous owner gave me 6' tie downs and showed me how to tie down the ski from the tow cleat in the rear to the back loops of the trailer.

I noticed though in the yamaha manual it says to use the loops on the stearn of the boat to tie it down.

I found some transom tie downs that are only 2 feet in length that would work perfect for tying down the ski how the manual says to do it.

Is there anyone that uses transom tie downs or do most people just tie down from the cleat over the platform and down to the trailer loops?

I use the transom tie-downs. I don't know how your trailer is set up, but on mine, it was hard to find a place to hook it where there was enough room for a ratchet strap without having to crank it all the way in to the hook.

In the end, I got 6' straps, and cut about 4' off of the long end. This way I can ratchet it down to only about 12" total length without leaving 5' of dangling strap to deal with.

Make sure you use the ratcheting style, not the pull type. I hit a pothole and when the trailer tire popped out, my ski came two feet off the trailer and landed on its side. Good thing WFO was riding in the car behind me to help me get it back on the bunks. I will never use the pull type again.

Oh, and because of that accident, I also use a long strap going from one side to the other, across the seat. So, two at the back, one side to side. Can't be too careful.

Yes, at Academy. They're tough to find otherwise.

I use these from Westmarine. They are 2' long which is the perfect length for attaching my SHO's transom hooks to my Triton LT. They don't ratchet, but the buckle clamps down and basically does the same thing. It also has a velcro strap around the buckle to prevent it from accidentally opening and a rubber pad to prevent it from scratching the hull. I've hit some big bumps on the hwy and seen my trailer make big hops, but after stopping to check things out, these tie downs were still tight and secure

...just don't over-ratchet them down. All you need is SNUG... do not tighten them down to the point where they are straining on the hull.
