    Gsx Backfiring Help!

Recently put a new engine into my 98 gsx, was working fine all day then it started to make sounds like it was bogged down. got it out of the water and now it runs for 5 seconds before shutting down. Backfires every few times you start it up. Any ideas?!?!?!?

Check your reeds, you may have busted one.

Fatigue/age can break one. Even a backfire can do it.

Pull them out and check them.

I spoke with SBT also to get their opinion and they seem to think it could be a clogged fuel sending unit or the computer. Does that make sense? Would a computer cause backfiring?

Clogged fuel systems don't backfire. They just don't run, or seize pistons.

Yes, a MPEM failure can cause backfires. But the reeds are the most likely culprit. Very seldom does an MPEM fail...especially before reeds. They're just looking for a part "they" don't have to warranty...

Check the trigger coil and make sure there is no metal shavings around it that will make it backfire

Yes, this too. 98's did shear more metal than newer skis. If you pull the front cover to inspect this, dab some clear silicone over the solder joints on the inductive pickup. Then any future shavings can't short it. They almost always blow a fuse when this happens also.
