    Impeller coming loose PLEASE HELP!!

    I just put a pump together for a '98 STX 900. Twice now within about an hour ride time the impeller has come loose! Why would it do that? Did I not get it tight enough? Doesn't the driveshaft spin in the direction to keep it tight? What is going on here?

    It must be torqued to specification. When you are holding the throttle and ski is under load the impeller stays tight, but when you release throttle the sudden decrease in RPM's and pressure still on impeller it will cause the impeller to spin loose from shaft. Somebody got specs handy?

    I found somewhere 72 ft pounds, that sound right? Anyway, I put some red Locktite on there and tightened it as tight as I could with a 14" Cresent wrench. Took it out for a couple of hours today. So far, so good.

    i looked at the specs on my ultra 150 and it calls for 72 ft lbs...so im sure its the same on yours. It didnt call for loctite though but as long has you can break it loose when you need to remove it...

    damn never use red loctite on that !

    always blue loctite 242 or anti seize compound.

    the torque range varies but is between 72-90 ft/lbs of torque on almost all kawis.
