Converting Metal Pump from Grease to Oil

Can those of you that have already converted their pumps from grease to oil share some tips with me on how you did it? A point that I am not sure on is how the cone gets drilled and tapped for a fill point for the oil. Any other information would be appreciated.

I filled the plastic cone relief area with JB weld and drill and tapped a 3/8 " stainless set screw - It doesn't realy matter much were you drill it - I installed my hole at about 10 oclock or 2 oclock and filled the cone about 1/2 with high pressure syn gear oil - amsoil. Leave the tap alittle shout so the set screw kind of bottoms out and ue some 515 or rtv to seal the threads. Neve had a problem.

Clean the grease all out first..Then what i do is add 1.5 ounces of gear oil in the nose cone, I just set the pump on my vise and push the cone into the pump..Tighten it down and away i go..

That is interesting Snoman. In my experience with the old non-grease design, I thought you had to add more than that for adequate lubrication. I am not speaking from experience here, the question is how much of a bath do you need to lubricate and remove heat into the fluid. That is why I believed the cone needed a fill point. Maybe you don't need as much as I thought.

does the pump seem to spin better with the gear oil rather than the grease?

i cant say i know the difference i was more concerned with BETTER lubrication and LESS heat ...........IMO pumps lubed with grease cant spin as free as pumps lubed with wet type gear .......i say it has to spin easier especially after heating up!
