SL 900 Starts up then dies

Having another intermittent issue with the 96 SL 900. Tried to search to no avail.

The issue is the ski starts up easily but then dies right away on the water. At times it does not die but will run but only to 5500-5800 rpm. Other times it will run at full tilt but that is short lived, it bogs down and dies.

We just had the carbs professionally rebuilt so I am leaning away from that being the issue. Upon visual inspection all the nozzles squirt fuel when you hit the throttle. All the fuel lines and oil lines are in order. Compression is normal.

When it is on the trailer after this happens, out of the water, it starts right up, revs up really high on its own, then dies completely. We thought it was an issue that only occurred when it was warm, but now it happens cold or warm. As I said intermittently it runs OK.

While searching through threads we found a service bulletin that said the red/purple wire from cdi should be connected to orange post Tried the orange wire/red&purple wire thing per search. did not help, but did not hurt anything either.

    TIA!

Check indexing of flywheel on crank. Had a SL 900 doing the same thing and it ended up being the flywheel was worn under the crankshaft nut. Key was worn which allowed the flywheel to move, changing the timing. Only took 3 weeks to find it.

wow, good find, i wonder how the key got worn? seen that on old outboards and stuff with a thousand hrs. definately a 3 weeker! heres a long shot but easy to check. look for water contamination in the fuel. i have come across a few ski's in the past that did the erratic behavior your describing. get some water up behind the diaphrams on the carbs and you will see axactly what you are seeing. also take notice if it likes to die going into a left turn, this tilts the carbs up at an angle and pulls the heavy water from the bottom of the diaphram and kills or bogs the ski.
