    Oil and Filters

I'm curious to know everyone's opinion on oil filters and oil they use in their everyday cars. Meaning not high performance just regular oil and filters. Weve always used regular Pennzoil and Fram filters on their everyday cars. But im starting to hear from guys that work in shops that fram filter are garbage. So what filters and oils are all you guys running? I'm hearing good things about napa golds but their pricey. Are the regular napa filters on grade or better then the frams? I'm thinking about switching to the napa's about the same price and they come in cases which i like.

And well Penzoil is always pretty cheap at wal mart.... anyone know where you can buy drums of penzoill ?

    Any input appreciated....

Here is something from several years ago.

I normally use synthetics in my vehicles so I can extend the change interval.

I avoid Fram products like the plague.

BTW I am a professional auto tech.

Napa Gold filters are made by Wix, which is a VERY good filter. I would not put a Fram filter on ANYTHING that I own. If you really want to see the difference just cut one of each filter open and look at the quality. I also would not put Penzoil in anything that I own. When I was in school we did some oil analysis and Penzoil had more ash content in it than any other oil that we tested. I also run Royal Purple synthetic oil in everything that I own to lengthen my oil change intervals. If you figure the price of doing an oil change every 3000 miles and then figure doing it every 5000-6000 miles with synthetic, you really arent saving that much money especially if you figure in your time to change the oil. If you are looking for a good inexpensive oil (NOT CHEAP there is a difference), Napas oil is made by Valvoline. If you want/need to know anything else about Napas products, just let me know.

It looks like Napa is going to be the winner for the filters.

Jeffsntx what is a good conventional that you guys tested? Valvoline? I'm starting to think Mobil and castrol are better.

Valvoline and Castrol were the better of the conventional oils that we tested. I dont recall testing Mobil products. I know we tested Penz, Quaker State, Valvoline and Castrol. I THINK we also tested Amalie. I would go with Valvoline or Castrol, but since Napas oil is the same as Valvoline and MUCH cheaper than the Valvoline label we use it in all of our company vehicles and have never had any oil related issues.

thats funny i use castrol gtx in my camaro and every one tells me its a cheap oil lol. its the only oil that cuts down the valve chatter.

i use purolator filters. there was a guy that took like 5-6 fillters apart and they all had cardboard or something like that holding the filters in place. purolator was the only one that didnt. and he test fram, k&n and a bunch of others.

i used moblie1 for bikes in the motorcycle that crap was expensive it was like 8.50 a quart. in the cobalt i throw any thing as its warrantied for 100k and i dont plan on keeping it past that.

    oil filter study

    http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfi...lterstudy.html
this was done a few years ago, good info

bottom line pay $8 or so for a Mobil 1 or equiv filter.

Run Syn oil like Mobil 1 and go 12K to 15K between changes.
I can tell you I'm about to turn over 200K on a '01 BMW 3.0L and
the insides look like an OR. Doesn't burn a drop of oil

I always use a good synthetic filter and oil. It's real simple, cheap oil is just that-cheap oil. A crappy filter will not filter the crappy oil as well as a synthetic style filter. Two negatives equal poor filtering and oil life...poor engine.
Amsoil all the way for me, take the time to check the wear comparisons and the microns the filters
