Are you looking for one to test with?

They are getting hard to find, but someone might be willing to loan you one. I don't have one myself, but there are a few around.

Stacking wedges can cause the water cooling tube to be too loose in the nozzle fitting, and the lower mounting bolts may not be long enough for a solid hold in the pump base.

The wedge has a lip on one side and a bore on the other for the connecting of the pump pieces. So just machining more angle wouldn't help unless it was rebored too then you still wouldn't have a perfect piece and possibly a leak per say that might suck air and create cavatation.

No suction after the stator, just pressure

You are correct that the wedge piece has to fit properly and snugly between the nozzle and the pump stator.

There are lots of forces at work around the nozzle area - forward thrust, steering thrust, trim thrust, and wedge offset thrust. Clamping pressure from the long bolts, not to mention the cooling tube fit.

Pretty sure Hot Seat still sells them, but very pricey.
