Twin Pipe XPL with Twin Outlets

    Hi.

I am running a twin pipe XPL with a TDR waterbox and custom single outlet. I do not have any water running directly into the waterbox. Based on this, what role does the waterbox now have?

Instead of running the twins to the collector and through a single exaust tube, I would like to do away with the waterbox and run twin transfer tubes and twin outlets for no other reason than the sound.

Would a pair of smaller car or bike mufflers at the rear hinder or maintain performance?

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Mike

    Hey Mike,

The pipes are designed to have the waterbox in place, as they need the restriction the waterbox provides to scavenge properly. TDR waterboxes reduce backpressure, and 99% of the time kill the performance of the engine. Only flat-top setups have benefitted from reducing backpressure.

Two-stroke tuning is a finicky, fine art. And can cause you much anguish and expense when veering away from what is known to work.

I agree. Could the TDR waterbox be the cause of me seizing the pistons at wide open throttle?

That is doubtful, but possible. I've heard of TDR boves randomly seizing on our old 800 setups, so maybe? You could also just be lean on top, or have an air leak.

I'd try try the stock waterbox and see if she lives, if your jetting is what's recommended with the twins.

    Good luck!

    For sea level(ish) Your jetting should be 160L 140H 2.3 N&S 95g Spring and 17psi P.O.

    Sound about right??

Sorry Dan for the late reply.

I have no idea what the setup is. I will check this weekend and get back to you.

Does anyone have pics of the inside of a waterbox?

If so could you please email them to me

    Thanks

I think when you check your carbs, you will find the reason for sticking your pistons. You need to get REALLLY intimate with twin pipe ski's. You NEED to know what's in them, how and why they behave certain ways, and how to tune them correctly. A lack of any of the above, and they will bite ya hard!
