Directions for the Oakley to Benicia Bridge Leg

(Refer to attached diagrams for comparison)

Rolling start behind pace boat – rolling west from east of the bridge

    Specifics explained at riders meeting.

WB San Joaquin River under Antioch Bridge following shipping channel to the west.
Green channel markers will be on your right – red on your left.

    Turn-1
    38.01.796 N
    121.49.819 W
Just past green marker 5, you will see a large body of water (Broad Slough) to the right of the main shipping channel.
Turn 20 degrees right and enter Broad Slough but steer for the WEST (left) shoreline. You must stay to the left shoreline to avoid Frazier Shoal on the far right shore.
You will see a partially sunken tugboat and barge on the left shoreline.

    Turn – 2
    38.03.789 N
    121.51.200 W
At the north end of Broad Slough, Red Buoy #2 marks the entrance to the Sacramento River. Make a left turn around the buoy and proceed SW staying in the shipping channel.
Stay right when you see the PGE smoke stacks on the left shore.
Chips Island will be on your right, the Pittsburg shoreline will be on your left.

Green marker 27 will mark the end of Chips Island.
    38.03.184 N
    121.56.179 W
You will veer slightly left and parallel the left shoreline. Do not venture to the right outside the shipping channel or you will be entering Honker Bay (bad water)
Keep Green markers on your right – red markers on your left.

At the 3 mark on the color photo, the area to the right outside the shipping channel is called “middle ground”. (key word – ground) Stay in the shipping channel!

You will pass green markers 25,23,21, and 19. Two large cranes will be in sight on the left (south) shoreline. This is the Concord Naval Weapons Station and you must stay clear of the docks which are considered restricted areas. Stay in the shipping channel.

The shipping channel will veer to the right, and then to the left.
The Benicia Bridge will come into sight.
Pass green marker 9 and you will see 2 refinery docks on your left.
Continue west to the bridge passing between the green navigation can on your right and the red can on your left. The ship passage under the bridge is to the left and not the center of the span.

    Turn – 4
    38.02.360 N
    122.07.129 W
Pass under the first span of the bridge, turn left around the first support on the left, and pass red can #2A as you merge back onto the shipping channel.
You will now be proceeding east, and red markers will be on your right, green on your left.

Stay in the shipping channel heading back towards Antioch.
Pass Red marker 20, 22, 24, and stay to right at Chips Island (green marker 27)
    38.03.184 N
    121.56.179 W
The PGE smoke stacks will be visible dead ahead. Steer for the stacks.

    Turn – 5
    38.02.653 N
    121.53.363 W
Just past the smoke stacks turn right onto New York Slough at red marker 30.

Follow New York Slough east past green markers.

    Turn – 6
    38.01.626 N
    121.49.679 W
New York Slough turns into the San Joaquin river here. Stay to the right and do not turn left onto Broad slough. Stay in the shipping channel to the east. The Antioch shoreline will be on the far right. The shipping channel runs along the north shoreline. You will pass green markers #5, 7, 9, on your left side, and red marker 10 on your right side.
Pass underneath the Antioch Bridge in the shipping lane.

    Turn -7
    Antioch Bridge
    38.01.660 N
    121.45.124 W
Turn right, and steer for the finish line at Lauritzens Harbor, using caution past the Oakley Fishing pier which many people fish from

Directions for the Oakley to Rio Vista Leg

(Refer to attached diagrams for comparison)

Rolling start behind pace boat – rolling west from east
    Specifics explained at riders meeting.

Passing the start line, skis will turn right (north) and head for mid channel parallel to the bridge. Turn to the right (east) between the red and green navigation cans and proceed E/B on the San Joaquin River. Stay in the shipping channel. Keep red markers on your right, green on your left.

You will pass Green markers 17, 19, and 21.

    Turn-1
Located just past the power line towers on both shores,Green buoy #25 is not really a turn, but a reminder the main river runs to the left.
    38.03.584 N
    121.40.803 W
The cross channel here is named False River. Stay on the main river and do not take False River.

    Turn – 2
At Green marker 27, steer 20 degrees LEFT (NW) and exit the main shipping channel.
Steer for the entrance to 3 mile slough on the west shoreline. (Green marker #1)
When traveling on narrow channels you must stay to the right of center as if you were driving down a street.

    Map mark #3
You will approach the OUTRIGGER MARINA which is located on the west shoreline. Just before the marina there is a hard to see white sign on the east (right) shoreline mandating a county ordinance 5 mph no wake zone. The sign is located at

    38.06.662 N
    121.40. 980 W
If you are speeding or making a wake, you could be cited with a $500 ticket.
For this event, you must hold your position in the slow zone – no passing allowed.

The Outrigger has 6 boat sheds, and the restaurant guest docks.
Once you pass this area, Brannon Island State Park launch ramp is on the right.
You will still be in a slow zone and must proceed at NO WAKE speed.
This area is heavily patrolled by the Coast Guard and Sacramento Sheriff.
Just pass the marina docks, a small hard to see white sign is on the left shoreline signifying the end of the slow zone. This sign is at

    38.06.799 N
    121.41.339 W
Now you can let it rip again.

    Turn 4
A half mile up, you will pass under the 3 mile slough bridge and enter the Sacramento River to the right. Use caution here as it is a high traffic intersection from 3 merging channels. Steer 20 degrees right and re-enter the shipping channel at red marker 22.
Red on right, green on left.

    Turn 5
    Pass red markers 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, and 32.
Pass under the Rio Vista Bridge and proceed to the first red marker (36) 300 yards north of the bridge and circle it to the left. The GPS coordinates for the Rio Vista Bridge are
    38.09.556 N
    121.41.040 W

Proceed southbound on the Sac River in the shipping channel.
Green markers on your right – red markers on your left.
You will pass green markers 29 all the way down to 1.

    Mark 6
is where you entered the Sac River from 3 mile slough. Stay to the right on the main river and do not pass under the bridge on this leg. Stay in the shipping channel and you’ll have it made.

    Turn 7
To the left of green marker 1, you will see RED BUOY #2 marking the north end of Broad Slough. DO NOT TURN LEFT BEFORE RED BUOY #2 to avoid hitting Frazier Shoal and being penalized. Turn left (south) AROUND Red Buoy #2 which is located at

    38.03.825 N
    121.51.060 W
Follow the west (right) shoreline of Broad Slough until it intersects with the San Joaquin River. (You will pass a half sunken barge and tugboat on your right, halfway down the Slough.)

    Turn – 8
    38.01.819 N
    121.49.827 W

Steer slightly left for green marker #1, where Broad Slough turns into the San Joaquin river. Stay in the shipping channel to the east. The Antioch shoreline will be on the far right (south). The shipping channel runs along the left (north) shoreline. You will pass green markers #5, 7, 9, on your left side, and red marker 10 on your right side.
Pass underneath the Antioch Bridge in the shipping lane.

    Turn -7
    Antioch Bridge
    38.01.660 N
    121.45.124 W
Turn right with caution, and steer for the finish line at Lauritzens Harbor, using even more caution past the Oakley Fishing pier which many people fish from

    Congratulations!
You just rode 37 miles like it was nothing... 87 if you rode the Benicia leg as well!!!
Go enjoy some Chicken and Ribs and we'll score this thing!!!

We rode from Turtle Beach Resort to Wimpy's yesterday, what an awesome 45 mile trip each direction.
Perfect for an endurance race there as well.
