    Radios for ocean riding?????

I am assuming if I am going to go out on the ocean I should have a radio with me, do the 2 way radios work fine, will they get in touch with the coast guard or boat tow service or do I need a vhf radio to communicate with those services?

Repeat after me: "I will NEVER ride in the ocean without at least one other buddy"
"I will always stay within site, and communicate with my buddy"..

I can't stress this enough. There is already a guy over in Bali that is lost at sea, and they are still searching for him. He was extremely experienced, and had a cell phone. But sadly, his buddies were not within site of him when he had some sort of mechanical problem.

Please play it safe...its just not worth it.

So true!! We had 16 riders show up for a 100 mile ocean ride & were all assigned a wing man. If the partner was slow, tired or having issues you were there with him/her, that's how it works. Ralph (trawlercat) did his job well & it could have been a big mess in that fog if he didn't stay by his partner. Granted you won't always go out in the fog but it can reverse on you & be sunny 1st then turn ugly.
Even in the sunny part of the ride on the way back a rider broke down & was towed in 20+ miles by another rider & the broke rider hopped on the back of an rxt for the ride back, again, that's how it works.

    Radios and other stuff

Here's a thread that talks about lots of different equipment for offshore riding; http://www.greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=42653 I carry a M72 ICOM handheld, it's six watts and will transmit just a bit farther than most other handhelds. The fixed mount radios works best (25 watts), but I think we're the only ones running them. Mike
