    Fuel injected or carburetors?

Check the battery voltage, using a multi-meter, at the battery posts. While the starter is cranking the engine, you should see at least 10.6 volts, and preferably 11 volts or higher.

A failing battery (even one that has been charged recently) might be able to spin the motor out of the water, but the added load of the impeller in the water can overwhelm the battery. It still cranks, but there is not enough voltage to power the ignition system.
