    Buying a SL750 - Quick Question

    Hey guys,

I plan on going with a friend who is planning to buy a SL750 that needs some work. The guy was given the craft by somone else who took the engine half apart due to some unknow lack of speed issue ...I'm thinking it needed the usual carb cleaning.

I have two already, so I know my way around them, but just wanted to run by you guys my plan of action.

#1 Put the heads back on the jugs.
#2 Turn in over with a booster pack and check the compresion.
#3 Place the middle cylinder at TDC and measure the distance between the sparkplug hole and piston of the MAG and PTO. If they are equal (+-?), crank shouldn't be twisted.

Any other major things to check? The SL is a bargin basement deal, less than $200, so I know it will need carb cleaning, fuel pump, etc....

With any of the pistons at tdc, the others should measure the same down in the bore. If thats good and compression is ok, thats a good deal!
Be sure to go through all of the fuel system. Replace all fuel (especially if they are the original grey Tempo brand) and oil lines, and check the fuel selector for restrictions and leaks. Upgrade to the triple outlet fuel pump.
Don't forget to save and re-install the return line restrictor if it's in the return line.

I'd suggest turning the driveshaft over by hand with the plugs out. Should help you "feel" the stator bearings if they're bad.

You said the engine was half torn apart? If the engine wasn't fogged, the crank (and bearings) may have started rusting. Just the moisture in the air can start the process.

We picked it up today for $150. Everything looks complete, but pretty much everything was taken apart. From the electrical box to the gas tank, all the bolts were removed. They guy said he was planning on stripping in to the bare hull and rebuilding it, but then he ran into time and money issues.

I measured the crank, it seems fine, full of oil in the cases also. All the bores look good except for the PTO jug that has a little scoring. The PTO piston also has some light scratches on it. If I just hone the cylinder, should this be ok?

How bad are the scratches, can your finger nail catch them? Are you replacing the piston?

    Pics would be helpful.

Here are some pics of the $150 SL750.

The picture of the scored piston is the PTO one. The scratches are not that deep. Should I just sand it a bit and hone the cylinder?

Clean it up and check your clearances. If they're too great replace it.

You can buy a single piston kit for $72 if you need to swap that one out.
