    No service required

You do NOT need to buy any service for your GPS. It should work out of the box if it has two fresh AA batteries in it. The GPS signal is broadcast for free. The only thing you might want to pay for (after it's working correctly) is more detailed maps. You need to buy those from Garmin and you will need to have a transfer cable to get the maps from your computer to the GPS. You do not need any cables if you're going to use batteries and not connect it to a computer.

You need to be outside to acquire the satellites and be you need to be moving for the compass to work. You can see the satellites by steping through the Page button. If the unit came from far away, it might take awhile to acquire the location... Ron

    GPS

I got an older model Garmin GPS too....it came with my jet ski.
Save my rear a few times when I got lost in the rivers around Stockton Delta, California.........I also carry a cellphone with me too just in case I need it.......just make sure you pull it in a zip lock bag.

That would be a 4:28 mile, which is pretty phenomenal.

Arrow Garmin GPS 72 Owner's Manual and Quick Start Guide

Garmin GPS 72 Owner's Manual and Quick Start Guide are available from the Garmin web site, and also attached in the next post.

You may be able to use the Garmin Web Updater software to update your GPS 72 to version 2.50, May 09, 2008

To apply the update I think you will need to borrow or buy the special cable that connects between the GPS and the computer serial port.
