WATERTOP’S HYDRODRAG FALL NATIONALS SEES RECORD CROWD AND THREE PWC COMPETITORS BREAK THE 90 MPH MARK
Stan Hightower claims both the HydroStock and HydroUnlimited Championships in the RIVA Racing HydroDrag Fall Nationals as Salvatore Staino collects the best hand during the Route 1 Motorsports Poker Run.
Sebastian, FL – November 17, 2008 – WaterTop Unlimited’s® fall HydroDrag event treated spectators to a spectacular show of PWC speed and power with some of the fastest watercraft in the world competing in the APBA sanctioned Fall Nationals. The event drew 45 competitors from as far away as New York, Texas, and Puerto Rico, all competing in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 1000 at the C-54 canal near Fellsmere, Florida. Veteran PWC racers took the top spots in all four HydroDrag classes, starting from the innovative Launch Pad starting gate system and covering the 1/8th-mile track quicker than all the others.
Stan Hightower of Linden, Georgia was the days’ big winner claiming three championships on his Sea-Doo RXP-X watercraft, including the Speed Alley HydroStock class with a run of 76.4 mph followed by HydroDrag wins in the HydroStock and HydroUnlimited classes. Hightower edged runner-up DK Ledgerwood for the HydroStock win, but it took three video replays to confirm his win over Stephen Reid of Indianapolis, Indiana in the HydroUnlimited drag final.
The days other big story was the top speeds recorded in the HydroUnlimited Speed Alley event. Three competitors eclipsed the 90-MPH mark with the fastest run of the day coming from Howard Letsche with a run in front of the Stalker Radar Gun of 94.0 MPH on his Sea-Doo RXP top deck and turbo engine and Yamaha GPR hull conversion ski.
The Speed Alley HydroVintage class was won by Brandon Ferro of Texas on his 1997 Yamaha GP watercraft with a run of 68.7 MPH and veteran closed course racer Eric Lagopoulos took the HydroDrag HydroVintage win aboard his 1996 Sea‑Doo XP over runner-up Lee Smith on a Yamaha Blaster. *Ricardo Torres of Winter Park, FL worked his way back through the losers bracket to reach the Limited final against recently crowned IJSBA World Finals PRO-AM Limited Champion Dustin Charrier. Torres edged Charrier in what was another photo finish HydroDrag final for the HydroLimited Championship. Charrier was also runner-up in the Speed Alley HydroLimited class falling to winner Beth Hightower who posted a class best run of 74.4 MPH.
Spectacular warm weather drew a large crowd for the HydroDrag event then drastically changed overnight for the Route 1 Motorsports Poker Run presented by Watercraft World Magazine, with temperatures dropping near the 60 degree mark. Participants left Captain Hiram’s Marina with full gear for the 40-mile, five stop ride. Participants were treated to a special opportunity at stop two as Route 1 Motorsports conducted product demos with the new 2009 Sea-Doo RXT iS 255 and GTX Limited iS watercraft.
As the cards were tallied Salvatore Staino of Tampa, Florida held the highest hand with a pair of eights, ace high, bettering John Reardon’s hand of a pair of eights, king high. Staino received a cash prize and a PWC shop cart from Boober’s Blings for winning the Route 1 Motorsports Poker Run.
WaterTop will now be working with the APBA, racers, and industry performance experts on revising the rule structure to clarify class parameters and create parity for more racers.

You have the Unlimited Speed Alley results mixed up. Puerto Rico was an RXP at 90.1 mph. 93.0 was Florida with a Yamaha-Seadoo Conversion.
