    98 xpl will not start

I have a 98 xpl with a 951 new hot rod crank pro x pistons and good carbs. It back fires when you try to start it. it is getting spark and fuel. I bought the engine used and rebuilt it. Is it possible that it has the wrong mag. the 98 has a single coil and the others use the dual set up. can you tell the difference by looking at the mag.

Either a busted reed or the mag cup isn't timed/placed correctly on the flywheel.

Yes, the 98's had the old ignitions our 96's have. If you got a 99 or newer cup then it won't work.

I went to middle diddle too, but for only two quarters...

Yes, you can tell the difference but I'm not the authority on them. Maybe Worx will post up the differences. The 98's had only two humps (magnets on the cups), I do know that. They went to a digital ignition in 99, if memory serves me correctly he said there are 3-4 humps on them. Use the search feature in the meantime, as this issue has come up before.

Yes, thats what the guy wanted to know, what a 98 looked like (96xpss described it) and what a 99 and up looks like (what I described).

Do not keep turning it over until you replace that mag cup. Also, make sure you line up the little hole in the flywheel to the magnet of the mag cup. On a 98 its real simple, you line the front of the magnet to the back of the small hole in the mag cup. If you keep turning it over, it will actually cause an explosion, possibly damage your motor, lock it up or bust a reed.

the explosion part is true. it did not lock up but I will have to check the reeds. I hope I did not kill it it is all new inside. thanks for the help.
