    Advice on gp1200 vs 800?

I've stumbled across green hulk in researching pwc's and I've already learned more here than at all the other forums I've found combined. There's so much activity here, my stupid questions have gone unanswered everywhere else. Anyway, I'm considering a Yamaha for various reasons and I've narrowed my search down to either a gp800 or 1200. I've found one of each nearby; 99 gp1200 with 60 hrs for 3500 and an 03 800 with 75 hrs for 4500. Both come with trailers. Both prices seem reasonable and I'm leaning towards the 1200 to allow for future mods. Anything I should know about these models? I've read about the powervalve issue and the oil lines, but otherwise is there anything to look out for? Thanks in advance, hopefully I'll have some helpful info of my own to share.

    Welcome to GH.

Those prices seem really high to me. There are a bunch of deals right now for a few reasons... Bad economy and off season are to two main reasons.

You can get a 2000-2002 GP1200R or 2003-2005 GP1300R for $2500-5000. Nice ski's are out there. Just wait till you find what you want out of a ski.

That's good to know, thanks. If I could find a 1300 in that price range I'd be more than happy. I tend to do a lot of tire-kicking before purchasing so I'll heed your advice and wait out a better deal.

99 does not have powervalves Go with the 1200 or you will wish you had. The 99 GP is a fast ski, low 60's if I remember correctly, but not as fast as the 00' and up GPR, different hull. Those prices seem high but those ski's are very low hours which is a big plus.

In this market you can find a gp1300R $3000-$4500 just look on craigslist lower states like Ga, Tn, Al and shipping with a trailer is only $350-500, Also I have had both ski. The 2003 Gp800 was a fun boat but slow. The 98 Gp 1200 non pv was indestructable. But also slow as a dog....but it was a blast the hull is much small then the 2003's and if you want to jump the 99 will shoot you in the air. Anyways I would go for a Gp1300r they have the PV problem fixed. And they are such a fun boat. Hey good luck with all of this. In the price you are looking for Yahama has the best used skis for the money.

i bought my skis ( '02 1200 and 800) just about 2 years ago with the double trailer in the off season for 6,000.

I love my 1200 and my girl and/or friends ride the 800. get the 1200. you'll get bored with the 800 fast.

keep looking till you nide the right deal.

    Choices
    99 GP1200
    03 GP800R

Out of those 2 choices I would pick the 99 GP no question.
Others may go with the 03 because they ride in dif conditions or just want to puts arround.
    Regardless the 99 1200 is a dif platform than the 03 800.

I f you like the bigger platform i.e. the 800 GPR then go for the 1200R or a 1300R skip the 800 it is to tame.

Prices are low you might want to look at a modified GPR if you like speed
