North West Texas pheasant hunt
just got back from a hunt today.
Conditions were bad with 28 degrees, 30 to 35 mph wind, and snow.
This took place in north west Texas were New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma meet.
8 of us hunted 4 hours shot 13 birds and lost 3 in cover, and didnt have dogs with us. NOt bad for the terrible conditons. Plenty got away with bad wind. They would get up in wind and in no time were doing 100 mph.
Last weekend there were 35 of us and we shot 50 birds, but it was opening day and nice day with 65 degrees. The wind today was crazy with the snow blowing.
Here are some pics. Check out the tumble weed in the rack on this elk. (1st pic of elk) Wind had blown it in there. A guy raises these for those exotic ranges.

Im from CT. I went out to CA about eight years ago because a friend's [from college] parents were moving from CA to FL so we went to help them with the move. We then took one of their cars and drove it across the country and met up with them a week later. I was in my early 20s at the time and it was an amazing exprience..
Anyway, I had NEVER been out west before. When driving through Texas at night, a giant piece of tumbleweed blew across the road. I had no idea what the hell it was and I thought it was a ghost. I nearly shit my pants. It honestly scared the bejeezus out of me. Obviously, we dont have tumbleweed in he northeast
Lame story I guess.. but it makes me laugh to this day. When you mentioned tumbleweed above that was the first thing I thought of.

You got a better way, your not going to catch them with your hands.
In fact if you dont use 4 or 5 shot in 12 gauge you will only wound them and not get them completey down. They are very tough birds if you did not know that.
If your worried about extention or tree hugging then you need to come here to see how many pheasants there are in this part of the world.
IN fact the limit has always been 2 per person but they raised it to 3 as they are getting out of hand in our area big time.
I have busted out 3 different windshields in 2 years and busted out one grill also. Their are a ton of birds and are getting to be to many as it creates a hazard to vehicles and damage to crops when they emerge.
