    Everglades Nat. Park expansion

They spoke about this a while ago, now it seems it's going to be a done deal. When it's done, part of the intracoastal will be part of the National Park in Key Largo. The article states nothing will change at Tarpon Basin, we'll see. Would really suck to have the intracoastal off limits to PWC's there.

A bill that would expand Everglades National Park into the mangroves off Key Largo sailed through the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

Under the legislation, the National Park Service would be authorized to acquire 590 acres of mangrove habitat and 10 acres of land in Tarpon Basin. The Nature Conservancy, which has owned the property since 2003, plans to give the property to the Park Service.

"This underscores the federal government's continued commitment to the beautification and preservation of the Everglades," Sen. Mel Martinez said in a prepared statement. "The park expansion near Tarpon Basin will help to protect sensitive wetlands in the Keys as well as several endangered species."

The property comprises two mangrove peninsulas that extend northwest from Key Largo to the Intercoastal Waterway, encircling Tarpon Basin. The 10 acres of hardwood hammock make up the eastern edge of one of those peninsulas, almost meeting the Overseas Highway at Mile Marker 102.5.

Chris Bergh, who directs The Nature Conservancy's Florida Keys program, said the nonprofit made its 2003 purchase of the area at the behest of Everglades National Park.

"We've been waiting and waiting and waiting for this boundary amendment to happen," he said.

The Senate authorization, which was part of a broader bill involving public lands from Alaska to Florida, passed 73-21. The House of Representatives also must authorize the Everglades National Park expansion before the acquisition can be made.

The acquisition likely will not lead to new restrictions on fishing or public use, an Everglades National Park spokesman told The Citizen last May.
