Do some guys disable hour meters?

I am looking for my first Yamaha ski and need to know if I can trust the hour meter on anything I am looking at. I am mostly interested in 1999-2002 gp1200, xl, xlt, suv...etc. Can I assume the meters are reading correct if the stock motor is in place?

It is stored in the Gauge, I have never heard of a way to change them but you could swap gauges or buy a new one.

Thats not an option unless u don't use the gauge at all, or swap it for a newer unit
