    Kawasaki STX-12F Need advice

I found a deal on this 2004 STX-12F. I was told that it overheated and needs a head gasket. I have rebuilt a couple Sea Doo 2 strokes and was wondering how difficult these 4 strokes are to work on or rebuild. How many special tools are needed?

Just looking for the confidence to tackle this or should I just sell it as is?

    Thanks, John

well, to my knowledge all you have to do is remove the head cover, drain the oil loosen the timing chain, pull both manifolds pop the head off, remove the gasket, pop the new one on and put it all back together. it sounds like a lot but if you just take your time and keep everything organized you should be alright. I would recommend finding the reason it overheated before you tear it down because it may be more work than just changing a gasket.

Any tips on finding out what made it over heat. This came from a dealer that loaned it out to a customer. They did not know what the cause was.

I would check the coolant lines and the pisser on the side if they are plugged then you would have just wasted all that time an effort for nothing.

One place to check for clogged cooling line is just under the intake manifold. There is a cheap pot metal piece that comes from the block and goes into a hose. The pot metal corrodes away and clogs the line completely. This is a problem with 03 - 05 12f and 15f's. Kawasaki has fixed the problem with the new ones without telling the owners of the problem in a recall. The new ones have a copper piece separate to go into the hose so it doesn't corrode away. I haven't personally taken on the challenge of fixing the engine and don't want to have to but if you are mechanically inclined you should be able to do it. I would recommend you purchase the manual which I found on ebay.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will give it a try. This seems like a great ski. I have never ridden a 4 stroke. I can't wait.

When you do get it running you will like it a lot, it handles great and pulls tubers and wake boarders like nothing. it pretty quick but no speed machine mine tops out at around 55ish with 2 people.

    Sean,

Does it have enough torque to pull a skier? I have never had any luck with a 98 GTX Limited Sea Doo or a 14' Sea Doo Sportster Jet Boat.

I have never towed a skier before so I really couldn't tell you, I regularly tow a tube with 3 people on it and also a wake board or wake skate and it does that fine, I have never had an issue pulling people even towing a stalled 15F.

    Sean,

I guess I will see when I get it running.

    Thanks again, John
