    slx 780 problem

    hey guys, I took my 96 slx 780 out today and it will run fine for about ten min and then i guess go into limp mode and not run past half throttle. I took the spark plug wires off and then put them back on and it would run good again for another ten min. and then mess up again. what could this be?

    Any messages on the display?? Limp mode gets triggered for low fuel and Overheat .

    Well if it is truly going into limp mode then it is low on fuel or overheating. If it is something else look into the fuel system dirty carbs clogged fuel tank vent clogged selector switch. When was the last time the carbs were cleaned/rebuilt?

    the cabs havnt been rebuilt in a while. where can i buy the rebuild kits?

    Where are you located?? Any Jet Ski shop will have kits. Only use Mikuni kits.

    Need some more info please.

    Can you place your hand on the cylinder heads when it is running bad? If not, it's overheating. Try removing the thermostat if still installed. Otherwise check for an obstruction in the cooling system.

    What's wrong with your MFD? Have you checked the 1/4 amp fuse inside the elec box?

    Have you checked for oil in the tank? That will also trip the Limp Mode if low.

    It's possible you may have a loose wire connection somewhere. Check the ground and battery connections for tight and clean connections.

    How does the ski run when it is going good? Any hesitation or cutting out at WOT? I'd ask what your RPM are , but you have no idea without a MFD.

    Does the gas tank hiss pretty good when you remove the fuel cap? Is there sufficient fuel in the tank?

    Any more info you can think of will help us determine a possible cause.

    when i got it back to shore after it started messing up I poped the seat and the engine was pretty hot. It was hard to touch the plug wires. But the oil level was good and so was the fuel level. But when I started it back up after taking off and putting back on the plug wires It ran great for bout ten min and then wouldnt go past half throttle again. sometimes it will just cut back out of it and run fine.

    I don't remember what it was but there was a recall on both my 96's. I also had a SLT and SLX. What happened was the boat would go into limp mode and in order to find the problem all they did was cut 2 wires and put them together. This fixed the problem until they could get the part in. I believe it was a false reading on the MFD. Anyone??
