Intake Grate / Shoe Proper Fit?
My 1300 R&D intake grate was slightly hanging below the shoe surface although barely. When I removed it to slightly file it away I noticed the following:

Basically, the intake grate inside surface projects 2mm from either side of the shoe, into the pump inlet area. It appears that the fit is not very good. Has anyone filed this area down so that the internal dimensions of the grate/shoe are flush?
And yes, the shoe picture quality stinks.

Unfortunately these are not hand made pieces and some imperfections will always be there.
I personally have not messed with the inside of the shoe, but have definately had to work on my grate get it to fit flush.

Thanks, Richard. I was a wee bit concerned about filing on that grate. Still am, but less so. Did anyone notice any performance changes from enlarging the intake grate internal dimension at the rear ramp? I wonder if that would increase the chances of the pump over-stuffing? I would rather not find out the hard way!!

yes when I put the R&D aqua vave in my shoe. I did it on the bench and seen the same thing.
I bolted it together, checked the fit. tighten it together(the shoe and intake With lock tight and new bolts)I filed it. filled it, filed it, sandeded it and then installed it. a lot of darn work for something so small and costly.
YES, mine fit just like that!

i had to file the leading flush edge to match shoe..otherwise there was a ridge sticking down into water..this will slow you down a bunch....my pump shoe was down about 30 thousandths and it cost me a solid 7 mph !

I've yet to have a R/D product fit like they say it should. The rideplates are usually warped. The grates hang on at least one side, if not all the way around. We've all heard of the exploding grates.
You will need to make sure that thing doesn't hang down.

I've dealt with sanding the plate and filing the bottom side of the grate and understand the occurence of R&D imperfections from working with my old gp800. The topside of the 1300 grate almost looked like it was intentionally smaller than I expected, though. Oh well, time to start filing
Thanks for the replies.
