Do I need to replace this head?
I bought a 1998 GP800 Limited from a dealer. It was half torn down. The head looks bad. I tore it down the rest of the way and could not find any other problems. From the picture, do I need to replace the head. If yes, does anyone have one? It looks like something got inside and damaged it. I was surprised that the cylinders and pistons are fine. Could this head damage be from a previous problem and they just didn't replace the head? The crank and bearings all seem to be fine. I would like to get this running without spending a lot of money, but I want it to be in good running condition. It looks like I will need a complete gasket set with seals. I was also wondering If I should replace the rings as long as it is apart.
Thanks for any advice. I have decided to make repairing these things a hobby and I still have a lot to learn. I can't wait to be able to answer the questions instead of asking them.
One last thing where is a good place to get parts? I bought some previously from Jay at Atlantic Power Sports, but there phone number does not work.
Here are the pictures. John

looks to me like the head was a previous deto. Was there any signs that it was apart before? as far as the cylinder gaskets or anything?

I agree it was from a previous condition. two ways you can go, have someone cut it and bump the compression or replace.
