97 Yamaha GP1200 - Running issues in water

97 Yamaha GP1200 Ski will not start in the water right after launch, did notice a high volume of water in hull. After put on trailer and water drained it started right away. Did not see any loose hoses.......Has anyone had this experience with theirs?.....If so what was the cause?.......Thanks

Just exactly how much water are we talking? Also, you can have loose hoses that you can't see. Trust me. And mine is only a twin...

Hmm. That's odd.... Maybe Brandon will chime in. He is the King of the GP1200.

Check the rubber hose under the rear bucket. Make sure it doesn't have a split in it. The way I found mine was to remove the seat and rear bucket and straddle it while someone backed the trailer into the water. You should find it right away. I had a later model GP that the plastic baffle had a squirrel or a rat chew through it. Yours doesn't have that, but I don't remember if the outlet is alum or plastic. I believe it is alum.

the j hose is common for splitting on these and this will sometimes stop the ski from starting due to fumes coming from the hole in it... its the thick rubber pipe coming off the stinger going to the back off the ski... it happened on mine and my pals..

I'll take a look at the hoses near the rear of the ski.....It has to be fairly noticeable due to the amount of water.........Thanks and I'll let you know if I find it.........

Another thought.....do you have a leaking head gasket that could be spraying water out? If you have issues with starting once it's been launched, It's possible that you have such low compression due to a leak that it won't start. I would do a compression check on the "hard starting" issue.

Tests I use on the trailer.

Motor water leaks can usually be found while running on the hose. I clamp the incoming water supply line from the pump just ahead of the y fitting so I can get decent pressure to the motor when flushing on the hose.

Hull leaks can be found by filling the hull with water and looking underneath to see where the leak is. no need to over fill, up to the bottom of the motor is plenty.
