    When to replace reeds??

I have the carbs off of my 2000 Gp1200R and was wondering if I should replace the reeds while i am in there. The boat is stock with the exception of flame arrestors, dplate, rejet and acc pumps removed.

The boat only has a total of 39 hours but was wondering if age takes toll on the reeds.

    Thanks

IMO ...if they still seal and you can feel them "POP" as you slightly nudge on them and there are no cracks or chipped edges...your good. If they are stainless stockers..."stock stainless?" then they last forever!!

I assume you are talking about the petals. Some do not pop as well as otheres. Also, do you know if the aftermarket reeds reduce reliability or do you have to rejet the carbs?

    Thanks

you should not have to rejet carbs with aftermarket reeds and reliability should be unchanged if you add a spacer plate with the VF3 setup on the gp1200r. If you hold the reeds up to the light and look through the carb side to crank side and see light leaking through where the petals seal then its time to replace your reeds

also look for burning on the tips of the peddles... At your hours I'd highly doubt you need to replace the reeds. I'd say stockers are good for 150 hours or so... Also, if you don't want to spend the coin on VFIII's a good set of 1300 reeds can be had for about $50-60 with very low hours. They are a nice upgrade to the stock 1200 reeds.
