How often do you rebuild your carbs?

Just interested in knowing about how many hours, seasons, years etc everyone waits before rebuilding. Just bought an 01 gtx with about 20 hours on the carb rebuild and was wondering. I am also gonna do a compression test after I get a look at the raves and clean em up if needed.
I had my cousin ride it befor it was shipped up here and he told me ran great so I had it winterized and brought up here to the land of cold. Anything else you think I should do other than tend the battery and wait for spring? I've also got a problem with the info gauge not working so I have to tear into that and see if it is a loose wire/ ground/ fuse. Are these things pretty prone to just going out? Lastly, the reverse cable is frozen up. Has anyone had any luck in lubing these things to get thenm unstuck or am I better off looking for a new or used one?

If the fuel lines have been replaced, factory gray temp lines removed you could go for years with no trouble. keep a check on the fuel strainer basket up front, look for trash. If trash makes it past the basket it go's straight to the little filters in the carbs, and that's where trouble begins. Fuel must pass through the first carb to make it to the second carb so if the first carb filter is dirty then it starves the second carb and from what has happened to me boom there go's the pto cylinder, too lean.

I thought by 2001 SD wasn't using grey lines any longer. These are black.

Nope, they used grey until 2003 from my memory.

If you have good lines, use clean fuel containers, and never allow the fuel to get stale (use Stabil in the off-season) then you could easily never have to touch them every 5 years. And then, only to clean the internal filter screens.

Has anyone had luck using in line filters to prolong the need to go in and clean the baskets?

Some have done this, but it does restrict fuel flow somewhat. I wouldn't do it.

But seriously, if you clean the bottom of your fuel tank-(shine a flashlight against one end, remove pickup and siphon out any debris with a 1/2" pipe and hose), and use clean gas cans they will probably never clog...with "good" fuel lines.

And always run your fuel system dry prior to any long-term storage.

I try to rebuild mine every year

Only because i race, but for a rec rider you can go a long time as long as its winterized right
