    crank advice

I bought a 2000 pro 785 from an owner who said he was riding and then it lost power and he shut it down immediately. He told me he took it to a dealer who said there was no damage and the ski just needed a new head and piston. Currently the piston is off and the cylinder is unbolted. The cylinder is smooth not a single scratch and the head is peppered a bit.

I have rebuilt a 785 before but I am not an expert enough to make decisions about a crank.

Has anyone seen a 785 that has had power failure due to a piston ring failure and not needed to have the crank rebuilt??

I will have pictures this weekend. Thanks guys

It is very possible that the crack is fine.. Inspect and take pics.

cool maybe i will get lucky. If only the mag piston and cylinder is out and I can see the crank right there, will that be seeing enough to make a decision? I know its hard to say without pictures but I'm just asking in general. Thanks

In general if there is no crap in the case cavity then you may be OK. There are no guarantees. I have had good luck with a good inspection and piston replace.

although there is alot of specks on the black part of the case, they are not sharp or deep AT ALL. pretty smooth despite the initial looks.

So what does the verdict look like. Do I need a new crank?

I have to agree. The rods look like they're rusting up, I'm sure the bearings have started too.

I know it's not the answer you were looking for, but better to address it now, rather than early summer and have to tear it all down again.
