Man Dies After Being Thrown From Watercraft

Man In 20s Hit Rock Jetty, Thrown From Personal Watercraft

METAIRIE, La. -- Police are investigating the death of a person riding on a personal watercraft on Lake Pontchartrain on Thursday evening.

Agents said a 27-year old man was riding the watercraft behind the Coast Guard station near Old Hammond Highway at about 5:15 p.m.

The Coast Guard said the man was thrown from his Jet Ski, landed on the rocks and was killed, agents said.

The New Orleans Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and Jefferson Parish Fire Department were at the scene.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was also involved in the investigation.

"There is a lot of open water here, so what he was doing we have not yet determined," said Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Capt. Stephen McManus. "But those types of watercraft are very fast and with operator inexperience, a lot of times, we see unnecessary boat accidents."

An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.

The victim's name has not yet been released.
