    Oil Change...?

    A buddy of mine (who has about 10 skis and runs a jet ski camp in the summer for kids) offered to help me change the oil on my ski which i bought used at the end of last year.

    05 yam FXHO (160hp 50 hours)

    I have seen a lot of stuff on here that has me weary of letting him change the oil. His skis all run fine and it sounds like he knows what he is doing but then I see a lot of stuff on here that sounds much more careful that he is.

    He says i need about 5 quarts of oil (10w-30 according to the manual) and an oil filter.

    I asked him how he is going to do it, he said he is just going to drain the old oil, then refill with new oil the exact amount he took out.

    I thought I read somewhere on here that would cause an overflow

    Any thoughts????

    Also, is the best pace to get the oil, the oil filter, and the CR9EB (Ngk) spark plugs at my local yama dealership?

    I do not wrench and do not know a whole lot about how to maintain cars or skis and do not want to do something that will mess the ski up. I got a yami because of their great reliability and simple maintanence.

    A link to the proper procedure on chaniging the oil, oil filter, and plugs would work as well...

    When I asked the dealership they told me it would be about $280, that is ridiculous...

    Overfilling is a common problem on those engines. It will cause the oil to foam and ruin the very expensive air filter.

    The amount removed should be measured, then just put that much back in (plus the filter, which should be pre-filled).

    When finished, warm up the engine, shut it off, then check the oil level. It should be near the Low mark.
