    Crankcase Oil

    Hey Gang,

I'm assuming the 96 SLX 780 has crankcase oil, couldn't find anything searching, in the sticky's, or in the service manual. Any info on how to change the oil and what oil to use would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Trent

its not a four stroke , you should have another tank that injects oil in to the gas if not you will need to mix marine 2 cycle oil in to your gas ,

unless your building a motor you will not need any extra oil in the crank case

Hi Trent,The SLX780 is a 2 stroke engine,it mixes oil with the gas, that oil lubes the internal engine parts.
SLX780 originally came with an automatic oiler, will have a small oil pump on the side of the engine with oil lines going to the carbs. There should be an oil tank under the steering pod. Under the front hood, just in front of the pod should be a cap for the oil tank.
The digital display,if working, displays oil level,I beleive on the right side.

Some people remove the oil pump in case of failure and mix oil into the gas, this is called premix.

Thanks for the response, but my KX 250 is a 2 stroke and the crankcase has oil as well. Maybe this is just for the clutch plates though.

To make sure, no oil in the SLX crankcase right.

    Thanks again,

    Trent

Your KX has oil for the trans and clutch plates. The motor is lubricated VIA the 2 stroke oil mixed with the fuel meaning no oil in the crankcase on your SLX.

The crank case oil you refer to on your KX is actually misleading they should call it gear box oil. Yes it is for the clutch and gears which you do not have on the SLX

You couldn't find anything about it, because there isn't any.

You should use a TWC 3 rated 2 stroke oil.

Look under your carbs and see if there's a oil pump mounted low to the case. It should have a short linkage going from the carb linkage to the pump. Also has (3) 3/16" oil hoses going from it to the carbs as mentioned above.

If there's no oil pump installed, you must mix your oil with your gas. A good ratio to use is 40:1 or 32:1 when breaking in new piston rings.
