    Codes 2004 explorer

    I pulled the codes tonight on the wifes 2004 explorer V-6 Code that came is P0172 bank 1 and 2 TOO RICH

    Whos got the answer will start and idle at 1100 for a while then idle goes down to 600 and smells rich

    so its P0171 and 0172?

    or 0172 and 0175?

    Just the p0172 it said too rich bank 1 and 2 do you need the vin number I can go get it.

    P0172 is a very vague code for bank 1 system rich.

    Most likely its a bad MAF, but could also be a bad FP regulator, bad rail fuel pressure sensor, or leaking injectors

    Try to clean the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner.

    Caution: if you dont have contact or electrical cleaner you can damage the wire in the MAF.

    That is the one coming from the air box to the plunum. I cleaned it and did not run any better. the expolrer has right at 50000 miles does that help any. I browed the reader from a freind It is a micro matco Thank you for your help The friend I got it from is going to check at his work tomorrow and see what the book says.

    pull the vacuum line of the fuel pump regulator on the fuel rail and see if there is gas in the vacuum line, Have seen a few of them sucking gas threw the vacuum line because the diaphragm going bad in the regulator.

    yes

    check Jim's suggestion too

    canister purge can cause a rich condition if the canister is full (rare)

    also, believe it or not, contaminated oil can set that code
