    best ocean ski

for playing around, and for sitting still in waves, fishing , snorkeling from, etc..

    used.
I was thinking normally aspirated 4tec gtx, or kawi lx, or yami fxho, or honda 12x(currently own but havent been in ocean with), or honda 12 (non turbo). good fuel economy a must- for range.

before i get started playing in the gulf i thought i'd ask and maybe replace my choice...

any experience and wisdom with this out there ?

I would say a used Yamaha FX-HO would be okay for the ocean.
They get pretty decent fuel economy, but I wouldn't go out there alone with ANY PWC, and get a 406 MHZ locator beacon.

SeaDoo RXT. You can make it smokin fast yet you can take it through the surf with ease, take the family out or go fishing from it. Check out the cooler/rod holder setup on my RXT.

Any of the skis you mentioned will work. Seadoo does have a closed cooling system so salt water will not move through the motor. I recently picked up a SD GTX and love it. It does come with a debth gauge and GPS. Very handy! Always charge your battary before heading out! Also carry a VHF & phone. A cooler with snacks & water is a must, through in a few beers too. lol

My worst fear is being stranded out in the Gulf.........

This may not be important to you but I noticed this while building a rack from pvc (it's not finished yet) to hold 2 gas cans and a cooler on the back of my RXT-X. This ski has a relatively small reboarding are on the back of the ski. If you want to fish etc from your ski the T-X isn't exactly ideal. Gas mileage sucks on this thing. Tha yamaha's and kawi have a much larger area on the back of the ski for hauling stuff or even for standing. The closed loop cooling is the biggest plus though for salt water use.

I thought the rear deck on the RXT/GTX was huge. Of course my idea of a samll rear area in 96 xp(about 7 inches wide)

Not when you're trying to carry a cooler and two 5 gal. gas jugs. It shrinks real quick.
