    Anyone Ever Use DBAN???

I am using a program called DBAN to wipe a hard drive that I got from a broken laptop so I know that nothing will be left on it. Does anyone have any idea how long it will take? The drive is 160GB. I selected the single pass since I really only need the stuff erased so I can put Windows XP on it perfectly and the screen on my laptop says 31 hours remaining

The hard drive is probably already clean enough for a Windows install. If you can cancel the program now, you might as well.

There are faster ways to wipe a hard drive, especially if you just want it cleared for Windows.

Some of the hard drive companies offer their own utility programs, that typically clear out the boot tracks in a few seconds. And they can zero the whole hard drive in an hour or so. What brand hard drive is it?

I'm pretty sure it is a Hitachi. I am just going to let it run because I canceled it early already and got a blue screen when I tried to install XP. I thought that something that was left on the drive (had Vista and could boot from it) was conflicting with the Windows XP installation.

    Have a look here.

The Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (DFT) utility can also clear the hard disk boot tracks, which is all you really need to allow a clean Windows install.

it turns out that my XP disc might have gone bad. Just for the heck of it I popped in the Recovery Disc from my HP Pavilion with Vista and that had no problem being read. I guess I better get searching for a disc on eBay or somewhere

The hard drive you are trying to use may be getting ready to bite the dust. One of the early signs of HD failure can be slow operation. Just a thought.

DBAN is a bit overkill for an install. We use it at work to clean old drives that we want to discard.
