What is a good home theater in a box?

Im asking for my father... I have a Denon home theater in a box in my livingroom that I paid $600 for that sounds great. Hes wondering what some other options are.

I think hes looking for something a little bit cheaper. I see a lot of Yamaha on ebay for reasonable prices...but Ive heard some inexpensive setups that sound weak so Im not too sure what to recommend to him.

Im not the most knowledgable on the subject. When I bought mine, I had looked it up on Amazon and read the reviews and etc.

I got an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver and Harmon Kardon 5.1 speakers. Total package was around $800, which is more than you may be willing to spend. But the sound is incredible, and cnet.com ranks these components as top notch. Researched this for about 7 months before deciding.

I had onr of the panasonic sysytems (cheap ones for like 399) before my Bose and it sounded pretty damn good as well but not as good as my Bose 3-2-1 does.

Years ago when I was a college student I bought a panasonic theater in a box off ebay for like $300 and it sounded weak. In fact, that was what I was referring to above when I said- ive heard some cheap ones that i wasnt impressed with..
It was one of the ones with tall plastic speakers...

You can have a 7.1 receiver and still run in a 5.1 mode.

    Total Harmonic Distortion
    10% THD @ 3 ohms

    The THD spec looks terrible
