Help smoke coming out of the front cover plug

I went to start my 96 xp after having the charger on it over night. I disconnected the charger and went to start it. it started fine and was runnig fine when I smelled electercal burning. I looked in the hull and the smoke was coming from the plug that goes into the front stator cover so I shut the ski off and pulled the front plug and it was burnt and two prongs were still stuck in the plug from the stator i guess so now im wondering if my stator is burnt or is it something in my front electrical box caused this to happen I just hate to replace the stator and it does it again any help will be great
    thanks Les

You apparently charged it using more than 2 amps? You fried your stator, and possibly your rectifier too.

Could that all be avoided if you would have unplugged your plug going to your coil box, and even charged it with the positive side of the battery off. It says right in the hull of the ski not to charge the battery while it's hooked up?

You can charge it hooked up, but not above 2 amps. You will burn up the battery if you disconnect the electrical anyway and attempt to charge it at 10 amps or above.
