What do you think about this rod and reel combo...?

I've been fishing twice on my newly acquired (oldie) boat. I know I will be doing more of it so I went out to Walmart and bought myself these. Now, Im a newbie and dont plan on catching 60+ pound fish so keep that in mind...I paid $102 for the combo.

I think you'll be happy with it. Stainless gears and bearings so it should fine for salt water. I'm lookin at another rod for the jet ski and it will be similar to that combo.

It all depends how serious you are about fishing and how much you go. Those reels have what they call a star drag, which is not as good as a lever drag which is more sensitive and can be preset to a certain drag. And with the rods, if you want to troll, the rod should have tip and stripper roller. But I'm sure that gear will do a great job if maintained. Don't worry too much about gear, learn how to tie good knots and fishing tactics and ohh that 12pack of beer.

Why'd you go with that reel? What kind of fishing are you gonna be doing?

Nothing wrong with an UglyStick. You high-lighted one set for a spinning reel though and you've picked out a casting reel. Personally, I like a Penn (spinning) for salt, with a spinning reel you can wade as well. That casting reel is usually used with down riggers or just dropped over the side to jig off the bottom.

I'm a fan of graphite rods....with a good rod and the right reel...you can feel everything that your jig/lure is doing or hitting....or more importantly....what's hitting you.
