Bare hull on a 1997 GTX healthy?

A friend has a 97 GTX and was wondering about this ski. Is it OK for the gelcoat to be completely rubbed through down to the glass? Or does he have to repaint it to protect the hull material? I know with Yamaha's it doesn't matter, but I'm not sure about Seadoos

Paint is going to make it better, but is not going to do a good job of protecting the hull over time. In my opinion, it needs to be repaired with gelcoat if you want to keep the ski for a while... Ron

yes but is it bad for the ski to be bare hulled? If its cosmetic I don't care.

The bare fiberglass mat will absorb water and cause more delamination. If it freezes, then the fiberglass will delaminate. At least that's what happens to large fiberglassed boat hulls. The best thing to use would be a two-part barrier coat epoxy like Interlux 2000. Then paint over it... Ron
