Thread: Broken Reeds...

Pulled off the carbs to rebuild them last night and found a broken reed valve. My question is, what would cause this to cave in like that? The tab bent down and pushed the actual valve flap out and it was just sitting inside of the whole assembly. The other thing I was wondering, I was rebuilding the rear cylinder, it had looked like the ring broke off the piston and just took out the top end, that was the rear cylinder. The broken reed is on the front cylinder, would that make a difference? Could the reed valve breaking caused the carnage to begin with? Or is it possible it was already broken before the top end went? It doesn't look like anything hit it, and the rest of the motor is clean (especially now..). Any ideas?
Also, where is the best place to order a new reed valve assembly/Reeds?

engine probably processed some hard parts at some point... something had to come loose and hit that to damage the stoppers
I have a box full of them stock reeds
